1968 Dodge Coronet

1968 Dodge Coronet - $42,500 - Fredericksburg, TX -

This stunning Dodge is one the highest quality restorations you will ever see. It is not a numbers matching car so please do not bother sharing your expertise with us. It is however one of the finest cars you will find on this planet. They started with an old gold grandma car and turned it into a pure show quality muscle car. We have some photos, the original build sheet, and window sticker to document what they started with. It was originally a 318 V-8 car but now has a totally rebuilt 440 V-8. It is equipped with an aluminum intake, 4 barrel carburetor, coated Hedman headers, M/T valve covers, chrome air cleaner, aluminum dual exhaust, power steering, big bore radiator, power front disc brakes, and a Torqueflite automatic transmission. Every nut and bolt on this car was attended to during the rotisserie restoration. The rock solid body was treated to a high quality paint job. An R/T hood and Bumble Bee stripe were added for the muscle car look. It has one of the most laser straight bodies you will ever see on a Mopar. All of the chrome, trim, and glass are excellent. The power top is brand new with an easy to install snap on boot. The immaculate interior features a split bench seat with folding arm rest, highly detailed padded dash, custom radio delete plate, all new fabrics, and new seat belts. The power operated windows have all new motors so they move effortlessly. Everything works and the instrument panels is highly detailed so it is easy to read. The 15 inch Supreme 5 spoke chrome wheels give that old school look with Cooper Cobra raised white letter radials. The trunk is show quality also. Take a close look at the chassis photos. It is detailed to the nines! You will need mirrors for car shows for sure. The car is almost too nice to drive but that would be a shame. That is because it drives better than any car in our current fleet. It is tight, rides smooth, and handles like a dream. Just stay away from bad weather and gravel roads and you will be fine. They never made a Charger convertible but the Coronet is the closet thing to one. Especially done up like this one. It is just simply awesome in every detail. One of the finest collector cars on the market at any price. We have a huge stack of receipts showing thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours spent, bringing you this fine drop top. Make it yours today. I promise, this car does not need a thing! Financing, insurance, and delivery are available.

Even though the Mustang has never been an exotic car, it is an icon and easily one of the most immediately recognizable classics. The Mustang brought about an explosive start to the Pony Car class and is a pillar of American automotive lore.

Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum

A 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang Convertible. This Mustang is a very nice looker or "20 footer". The exterior sports a recent, decent quality repaint in the correct Wimbledon white. While not a concours show winning quality, it is definitely appealing and local show worthy. The body is very straight, only a few minor dings and paint chips are present. There is some evidence of body work over the wheel arches but no obvious signs of significant damage, panel repair or replacement, or evidence of accident repair. The body also appears to be rust free as well as the floor pans and undercarriage. The most significant blemishes are at the lower edge of the left front fender where it attaches to the front lower valance and the rear left valance where it meets the rear quarter has some small dents in it. There is also some minimal overspray in various places throughout the body. The chrome and trim are all in fair, presentable original condition. There are some small dings in the bumpers and the door handles and trim show signs of patina and or peeling. The Mustang's stance and appearance has been upgraded with a set of aftermarket, original equipment style, 14X5 styled steel rims wrapped in Michelin Symmetry P195/75 R14 Radial tires. The Mustang also has 289 badging attached to the front fenders. All of the glass, the lights and lenses, and the plastic rear window are in good shape. There are no cracks, no major scratches or pits, or significant discoloration or fading. The convertible top is in newer condition and has no tears, rips, stains, or any other blemishes. It has a nice cover or parade boot that snaps along the edges and gives the car a nice clean look with the top retracted. It seals well and opens and closes without binding. The power top system could use some adjustment or repair as one needs to assist the top while the system is operating in both opening and closing. The interior is neat and clean with no major stains or odors. It appears to be "in like" original condition and aside from some minimal wear on the driver's seat, some fading in the carpet, a crack in the dash pad, and some very minor cosmetic blemishes, is in great shape. The most significant issues with the interior are the two rear quarter windows. While they are installed and intact, they are off track and will not roll up. The crank mechanisms are in place and operational. The handle for the driver's side does not have a set screw and can be removed. Most of the options and systems function as designed. There are a few things that could use some adjustments or repairs and will be detailed out later in this description. Mechanically, this Pony is in good drivable shape. There are a few fluid leaks seemingly from the power steering system and a small coolant leak from the thermostat housing area. There is also an audible noise believed to be play in the universal joint or joints. There are no odd noises, smoke, and no out of the ordinary vibrations from the engine. There is some doubt as to the engine's originality to this car. The car, by V.I.N. code, is supposed to be equipped with a 260 V8. While this is certainly a period correct V8 (5 bolt transmission mount) the intake and air cleaner both say 289. There is also an alternator installed in place of the generator. The car handles as well as it should considering the technology and it drives and steers well. The alignment seems to be dead on and there is no pull, looseness, or wandering. The recently replaced dual exhaust system gives the car a soothing rumble while idling and driving. The undercarriage is relatively clean and appears to be rust free. The electrical system appears to be in good shape. There are only a handful of items that do not work properly. The light for the rear license plate is not present, the horn does not work, the windshield washer sprayers are installed but no other components are present, the wiper blades will need replacement, the heating system will not blow out of the defrost vents although the rest of the system works properly, the cigarette lighter insert and or socket does not work and a unique little quirk with the dash illumination. The exterior lighting all works properly with the exception of the left front turn indicator. Most likely a burned out bulb. The unique quirk is while the high beams are in use, the dash illumination works properly although the high beam indicator does not. While using the low beam lights, the dash illumination stops working. The turn light indicator and oil pressure light are also not functioning. (Oil sender is disconnected on engine) There are some minor cosmetic issues such as a cloudy rear view mirror, and after market Jensen speakers installed on the doors to accompany the aftermarket "Mustang" am/fm cassette stereo. Other than those items mentioned, this is a solid functional Mustang. With so many companies providing parts, this car can be a joy to own, easy to maintain, and fun operate for years to come.

The History

In 1961, Lee Iacocca, vice president and general manager of Ford Division, had a vision of a sporting car he wanted to produce. The car would seat four people, have bucket seats, a floor shifter, be no more than 180 inches long, weigh less than 2500 pounds and sell for less than $2500. Out of this vision the Mustang was born.

The Mustang project was approved in September of 1962 and the first car rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964. Because the car entered the market in mid-year it is sometimes called a 1964 ½ model, though it was never officially referred to as such by Ford Motor Company.

In order to keep production costs down, much of the car’s drivetrain and inner structure was borrowed from the Ford Falcon. The magic of the Mustang was the wide variety of different interior, exterior, and drivetrain options that allowed owners to order a car as plain, fancy, economical, or fast as desired.

The car was heavily advertised at the time of its release and was advertised as “the car to be designed by you.”

On April 16, 1964, the day before it was to hit the showrooms around the country, Ford ran simultaneous television ads on all three major national networks at 9:30 PM. The following day large crowds of people swamped Ford dealers.

Ford sold 22,000 cars the very first day, 263,464 by the end of the year and hit the one million mark during the 1966 production year.

The 1964 ½ Mustang was only available in two body styles, a hardtop coupe and a convertible, each available with engines ranging from an economical 6 to three versions of V-8.
